JPG files start in Relief mode: lighter pixels become higher parts of the surface. Photos, maps and textured images with clear contrast generally produce the easiest models to print.

Common questions

JPG to STL FAQ

Why is Relief the default for JPG?

JPG files do not contain transparency, so Relief uses image brightness to create a raised surface.

What kind of JPG works best?

Photos, maps and textured images with clear light and dark detail usually produce the clearest reliefs.

Can I use Extrude with a JPG?

Yes. You can switch to Extrude, which separates a darker foreground from a light background.
